If you’re anything like me (a.k.a. poor), you hold out for the Community Days at the Gibbes Museum of Art, when you can get in for free. Thanks to the generosity of the Junior League of Charleston, the museum opens its doors for a few hours a few times a year so cheapskates can enjoy its lovely offerings.

The spring Community Day is on Sat. April 30 from 10 a.m.-1 p.m. Special activities include performances from the Mt. Pleasant Presbyterian Children’s Choir and the 3 Dudes, an under-12 rock trio. The main exhibits currently on view are Stephen Marc’s Passage on the Underground Railroad and A Soldier’s View of Civil War Charleston, featuring paintings by Confederate soldier Conrad Wise Chapman.
