If Charleston is feeling more bookish than usual this weekend, that’s because there are two major author events going on. First of all, the Southern Independent Booksellers Alliance (SIBA) is hosting a big trade show at the Embassy Suites in North Charleston. Local and regional authors like Nathalie Dupree, Patti Callahan Henry, Mary Alice Monroe, Nicole Seitz, Karen White, and many others (100+) will be in town serving as guest speakers, panelists, or just giving readings. Exhibitors and publishers will also be at the event. Unfortunately, it’s not open to the public, but keep your favorite Southern books ready so you can accost the authors if you spot them on the street. Find out more at tradeshow.sibaweb.com.
Luckily, there is an alternative if you don’t feel like stalking your favorite author. The Center for Women celebrates our bounty of talented female writers every year with the Lowcountry Women Authors Book Signing, scheduled for Sun. Sept. 18 from 2-5 p.m. at the Citadel Holliday Alumni Center. More than 60 authors — like Dorothea Benton Frank, Mary Alice Monroe, and Nathalie Dupree — will be on site selling and signing their books. Readings will be held throughout the day from the likes of Frank, Jacqueline Maduneme, Nicole Seitz, and Julie Dash. For the $10 entrance donation, the first 100 guests will get a copy of Dash’s book, Daughters of the Dust. Check out c4women.org for more.
