Creative Mornings talks happiness, time, and beer:30

This month Creative Mornings Charleston was tasked with finding a speaker willing to talk about the latest installment’s chosen topic, time. Last Fri. Dec. 18 at the Cigar Factory’s Cedar Room, COAST founders Jaime Tenny and David Merritt talked about how time relates to their business — beer brewing.

Tenny, donning a Christmas sweater with the words "I love beer," started her portion of the talk by complaining about the topic. "Time is kind of a negative word," said Tenny, explaining that people usually talk about time in relation to, well, not having enough of it. "Don't google time," she advises, "unless you're two coffees and three beers deep." 
COAST turns nine in February, and Tenny played a very important role in changing S.C. beer laws so that COAST could brew higher alcohol beers and serve pints of the good stuff at their brewery*. Needless to say these changes positively affected all breweries in the state — we'll drink to that.

While Tenny was changing laws, Merritt was brewing. "We don't make beer," he said, "we make an environment for beer to live. We're babysitters of yeast." He says that brew days can take up to 14 hours — and once you start the process you can't press pause. In the Q&A portion of today's talk someone asked Merritt what the "biggest pain in the ass" of brewing is. "The day never ends," he said.

As far as advice for home brewers, Merritt simply says, "Don't do it. Just buy beer," eventually relenting and suggesting that hopeful home brewers should "start simple, and grow from there." 

CMCHS started off with a 30 second pitch from Lululemon, the cult-ish athletic company so many people love to hate. That may be a little harsh, but seriously Creative Mornings, why give this time spot to a huge international company when a local business could have shared a more Charleston-centric message? Heck, I had asked to use the time to put forth an interview request, but LuluLemon took all the alloted time up. We appreciated Lulu’s PSA — take time to find your happiness — and the swag (free inspirational notecards). We just can’t quite swallow it from a big money-grabbin’ company.

The next CMCHS date is tentatively set for Jan. 22.
