Can’t get enough art? Neither can the folks at Creative Mornings Charleston (CMCHS), who hold a pop-up event tomorrow, Thurs. June 1, in collaboration with Piccolo Spoleto.

The show, aptly titled the Creative Evening Variety Show, will feature local performers in a pop-up style event that begins at 5 p.m. Normally home to visual arts, the City Gallery will transform into a vibrant city street scene as guests meander through the venue to see musicians, poets, dancers, comedians, and a puppeteer perform. An interactive mural and a Lumos gif photo booth will provide further opportunities for children and adults to engage with the arts.

“We're really excited to highlight artists we haven't worked with yet and who aren't regularly part of the official Piccolo events,” says Allyson Sutton, a marketing strategist and member of CMCHS. Performers include poets Matt Foley, Tyquan Morton, and Queen Washington; musicians Leah Suarez, Alex Collier, and Josh Smoak of Eastward Music; comedian Tim Hoeckel of Rip City; and shadow puppeteer Geoffrey Cormier. CMCHS host Ivan Lima is still working to confirm some surprise performances.

The event is free to attend, but cash donations to support participating artists and to fund future CMCHS programming will be accepted at the door. Guests may also enter a raffle to win local products and enjoy beer and wine at a donation bar.

Piccolo Spoleto hosts several pop-ups every year, working with local groups to expand the festival’s event offerings and to reach more people in the community. The collaboration between Piccolo and CMCHS came together in less than a month, after the Office of Cultural Affairs approached Lima.

CMCHS is a volunteer-run organization with chapters across the country. The Charleston chapter is sponsored by the Charleston Arts Alliance and hosts free breakfast lectures every month for creative people, as well as happy hours to benefit the organization.
