Today the Gibbes announced that the museum has been awarded a $10,000 grant from the National Endowment for the Arts to support its high school level arts outreach program, It Starts with a Dot
. This program is a collaboration between grad students in CofC's creative writing program and teachers at St. John's High School, a Title 1 institution on Johns Island.
St. John's provides access to artwork at the Gibbes to inspire students across all disciplines, and this year the Gibbes expects more than two-thirds of St. John's students to participate in the program. It Starts with a Dot
concludes with a student exhibition of art at the end of the school year. And, as a keepsake, the Gibbes partners with The History Press, a local publishing company, to create a student publication for participants.
