I dropped in on the old Marie Laveau's in Avondale during the Saturday storm deluge and sampled some of the new noodle bar fare. The rumor of innovative sushi never materialized (much to my dismay), but for the most part the noodle stuff looks pretty promising. They have only been open since Friday, and the first night was evidently a crowded affair. They were out of numerous items on Saturday, including the namesake uni (sea urchin), but I am excited to try the deep fried sea urchin listed on the menu when they get everything running smoothly. The steamed fish balls, served in a pool of coconut cream and a drizzle of scipy chili oil are excellent. The noodles aren't too bad either. The red curry, which features duck confit, was yummy.
The most exciting thing on the menu might be the twenty-six types of premium sake available in varying sizes. That should prove to be a popular menu, since the only other place in town that I know of to go and get such a great selection of sake is the Red Orchid. I doubt that the gringos over at Uni have a tenth the knowledge of Tony, owner of the Orchid, but the cool digs (wait till you see the new painted wall) at Uni will have the place packed for some time.
