Eating & Buying Local: I eat out a lot

Here's a down and dirty eating local recap for the week:

I eat an egg every morning for breakfast, so I've been getting my fill of local Chucktown Chicken eggs, which I bought at Saturday's farmers market.

On Monday afternoon, we ordered lunch from Five Boroughs Deli. It's a delivery-only operation and they use Normandy Farm bread.

Monday night I cooked a bunch of local produce from my CSA box and thawed out some shrimp I bought right off the boat in McClellanville a couple weeks ago. Made some shrimp and pasta with it.

On Tuesday, I was supposed to meet local author Signe Pike for lunch to discuss her upcoming book, a memoir about faeries, but we canceled because I hadn't finished reading her book yet (apologies to Signe). Instead, I ended up having an impromptu bowl of gumbo at The Glass Onion with food writer Jeff Allen, who talked a lot about the farm he's planning on his land in Ravenel. (He needs a name, so if you've got any ideas, send them along.)

Tuesday night I stopped by Santi's for some margaritas and chips before the Sedaris show.

On Wednesday, I went to Zia Taqueria on James Island with the all-male City Paper crew that tends to eat lunch together every week. They didn't seem to mind me crashing their party, and Zia was good as always. The cute bartender told me the shrimp I added to my salad was local, and I didn't question any further.

Today, I'm eating leftovers and planning to make eggplant marinara so those damn eggplants from Pinckney's Produce don't go bad!

I've made two grocery shopping trips this week, both to the Pig, so I'm doing pretty darn good on my buying and eating local quest. And, to be honest, it's not that different from a normal week for me. Except for shopping at the Pig. I had been shopping at Harris Teeter a lot, mainly because they've got an online shopping program that's so damn convenient. The Pig on Harbor View recently launched their own online deal, so I'm going to check it out soon.
