Goat.sheep.cow. opened three weeks ago at 106 Church St. The European-style formagerie is causing quite the stir with people South of Broad, as neighborhood epicureans flock to empty their charcuturie case.
Co-owner Mike Cohen owned a wine and cheese store on the Jersey Shore near Asbury Park — the place made famous by Bruce Springsteen. Cohen’s first venture emphasized the wine. But the focus of goat.sheep.cow. is the cheese.
We stopped by on Saturday to nibble on samples, and were impressed by the quality of their selection. We tried a grainy gorgonzola, white marbled with blue, that was so pungent it could make you grow hair on your hands.
We also loved the pâté and the prosciutto, which we dipped in the California house-blend olive oil.
All the products in goat.sheep.cow are artisanal. According to Cohen and his comrades, the majority of the cheese he imports can’t be found in any other store in South Carolina. goat.sheep.cow. carries dry goods like anchovy filets and fig jam from Spain.
Their baguette is baked in Brooklyn. As far as wine, goat.sheep.cow. has a small rack in the back with Portuguese whites and Italian reds. The fromagerie appears to be a breakout success. By noon the shop was filled with patrons.
