Holy City Brewing’s Chris Brown loves two things more than most: Charleston and beer. In the short time since they opened in summer 2011, Holy City has become one of the leading microbreweries in the Lowcountry, bringing home a gold medal from the Great American Beer Fest for its Pluff Mud Porter in October. Despite their success, Brown likes to stay humble. “We don’t have a motto or slogan, we just make beer!”
This month will see Holy City releasing the first beer of what promises to be an even bigger year for the brewery. Like the Pluff Mud Porter, the Slanted Porch Pale Ale brings to mind another signature Lowcountry feature.
“When it came time to add a new beer to our roster, historic homes downtown came to mind, and the one feature they all share is a slanted porch,” said Brown.
“Our beer dinners are different because we serve beer straight out of the cask. It tastes way more flavorful,” says owner Ted Dombrowski. Pints are $5, and the keg is tapped at 6 p.m. You’ll want to get there early, because they aways run out quickly.
Every edition of Ted’s Cask Happy Hour features a different themed menu, and in honor of the Super Bowl this month’s menu will feature game meats. The wild boar Italian sausage ($9) and buffalo nachos ($8) alone are enough to catch anyone’s attention.
“We like to do fun and interesting things no one else’s doing,” says Dombrowski. “It’s easy because we’re not a restaurant or a store, we’re a little bit of everything.”
