If you tend to scuba dive in the Charleston Harbor, you may stumble upon some treasure next time you’re swimming in the depths — that is, if you treasure good red wine.
Napa Valley-based Mira Winery made history several weeks ago when they submerged four specially designed cages of 2009 Cabernet Sauvignon in Charleston Harbor. The harbor will be home to the wine for three months in an attempt to learn the difference between wine aged in the warehouse versus wine aged on the ocean floor.
The idea was inspired by wines found in sunken ships that were thought to be enhanced by underwater elements, like movements of the water, temperature, pressure, humidity, lack of light, and oxygen.
After the three-month trial is over, the wine will be liberated from the ocean floor and taste-tested by local sommeliers in comparison to the same wine being aged under similar conditions on land.
