A popular and much-admired member of Charleston's food and beverage community passed away this weekend, and friends are rallying together on Tuesday to celebrate Chris West's life and raise money for his funeral expenses.
Mac's Place on East Bay Street, where West worked as a bartender, will host a drop-in event
from 11:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Tuesday, and the public is invited.
West was only 40 (see his obituary here)
. News spread of his untimely death on Sat. Jan. 4, and many friends took to Facebook to remember him. Most poignantly, perhaps, was close friend Jason Groce, a local bartender and comedian, who shared the following: "I made him laugh the last time I saw him, and no, that's not enough. And no, it doesn't help. I will tell you about him today or tomorrow or whenever you ask me about him. Please ask me. I want to talk about Chris. Let's talk about his smile and his genius. He is awesome. Think about that word and all that it entails. A friend put out that word today for him and it works. He was and is that word. Chris West is awesome. I miss him."
will be held on Wed. Jan. 8 at the Live Oak Memorial Gardens at 2 p.m. with visitation on Tuesday night from 5-7 p.m. at the J. Henry Stuhr West Ashley Chapel at 3360 Glenn McConnell Parkway.
