It pays to eavesdrop at coffee shops. Or so I learned this morning when a gregarious chap preached the gospel of Callie's Hot Little Biscuit at Black Tap Coffee. Turns out the gent had just stopped by the tiny restaurant and picked up a fried chicken biscuit. "And the chicken is from Rarebit!" he shared enthusiastically.
Turns out — and forgive me late night revelers if you're already well aware — that Callie's and The Rarebit have partnered on a chickeny biscuit treat. The retro diner preps the chicken (the same chili-powder blend they use in their chicken and waffles) early in the morning on Fridays. Then a Callie's team member hustles down the street to pick it up. Once back at Hot Little Biscuit, the staff throws some Sriracha mayo and homemade pickles on the filet, popping it between their signature buns, and voila: TGIF breakfast.
To sate the bar crowd, the fried chicken biscuit is also available Fri. and Sat. nights from 10:30 p.m. until they run out. And they usually do, we're told.
But like most bespoke* dishes in this town, these will cost ya — $7.95 for one and $14.95 for two. Then again, if you believe the fella we overheard this morning, then Callie's fried chicken biscuit is not only worth it, it's life-altering.
*Insert ironic tone here.
