After slowly rolling out its 'Evenings' concept in a few major metro test markets over the last few years, Starbucks may soon start serving beer, wine, and an expanded small plate menu at a select Charleston locations. The Post and Courier reported yesterday that the Jolly Green Giant has applied with the state for the permits needed to bring Starbucks Evenings to four Charleston area shops.
For a long time, Starbucks has sought to lure customers to its stores after rush hour with mid-afternoon happy hour specials on its coffee drinks. But it hopes to tap into a new market by offering various small plates and "craft beer" as well as red, white, and sparkling wines in the afternoon. The sample Evenings menu features truffle mac and cheese, meat and cheese plates, spinach artichoke dip, and more.
The four Charleston-area locations named in state permits, the P&C says, are in West Ashley on Sam Rittenberg Blvd., in Mt. Pleasant at Oakland Shopping Center, and in North Charleston near Charleston Southern University and at the Wescott Shopping Center. None of the four downtown locations are mentioned in the report.
We suggest Kudu Coffee or East Bay Meeting House if you're downtown and looking for a low-key cafe to enjoy your drink of choice. If truffle mac and merlot in a strip shopping center is your thing though, here's where to be on the lookout for Starbucks Evenings:
