I don't care what your religious affiliation, I think we can all agree on the higher power of a good biscuit. Which is to say, don't let an Episcopalian phobia keep you from tucking in at Grace Cathedral Tea Room's last day of operation this season.

The Tea Room will serve its final lunch tomorrow (11 a.m.-2 p.m.), Fri. June 9, and if you like traditional Southern eats, best arrive early.

I popped by with my family today and we got there at a quarter till noon, just before the rush. The kindly congregants seated us upstairs in a small vestibule packed with hat ladies. In their luncheon finest, they slurped cold cucumber soup and nibbled chicken salad while teen waiters cleared their plates.

We had a round of Arnold Palmers at my table which went well with the hearty ham biscuits — don't ask questions, just order it. And for $4 there was even a PB&J with potato chips for my two-year-old.

But that was hardly the best part. As I wrote back in April after my visit to St. Philip's Tea Room, the real goal in tea time dining is to capitalize on the desserts and Grace Church isn't playing. They have Huguenot Torte, pound and chocolate cake, key lime pie, and lemon chess. We opted for the pound and my son proceeded to annihilate a fistful of whipped cream in seconds.

Needless to say, after shellacking himself in peanut butter and cream, we needed to make a hasty exit. The church staff quickly charged my card and we headed down the stairs — passing Mayor John Tecklenburg playing the piano in the main dining room — and out the door full, happy, satisfied.

Amen.
