Sometimes even the crummiest circumstances can work out for the best. In Chef Joseph Jacobson
's case, it was his dream to run a barbecue restaurant that got deferred this winter.
After serving as the head chef at Med Eatery and Bar, Jacobson agreed to roll out Aris Newton and Tommy Eiserhardt's Wild Hare Smokehouse (90 Folly Rd.) All appeared to be coming together until just a week into business when, Jacobson says, the owners pulled the plug and locked the doors for good. Newton and Eiserhardt did not return calls for comment, but suffice it to say, the snafu turned out to be an opportunity for Jacobson. He bought the business — ovens and all — and reopens his own concept, Black Wood Smokehouse, today in Windemere Shopping Center.
According to the eatery's Facebook
page, Black Wood will feature "house-infused signature beverages, fresh local seafood and produce, and all the smoked meats you can pack in."
The menu is obviously meat-heavy, with offerings of pulled pork, beef brisket, turkey, pastrami, spare ribs, and chuck rolls that can be purchased by the pound. There are also classic Southern sides like tomato pie, grits, and boiled peanuts.
Black Wood Smokehouse opens today from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. and next week they'll start up regular service from 11 a.m. to 10 p.m.
