Chef Alex Lira runs Bar Normandy, named one of Bon Appetit's 2017 50 Best Restaurants in America
Congratulations are in order. Bon Appetit's 2017 50 Best New Restaurants in America
list is out and it includes three Charleston spots. Bar Normandy, Little Jack's, and Rodney Scott's BBQ join what the magazine's Andrew Knowlton and Julia Kramer deem the very best of the freshman class of American restaurants.
Now we're not surprised to see Little Jack's
and Rodney Scott's BBQ
make the cut. The former has been a media darling since day one, getting ink from Southern Living,
Thrilist, Eater, Garden & Gun
, and more. And frankly, so has Rodney Scott's. The only difference being that the launch of the barbecue spot was a more breathless affair with lines looping around the small King Street restaurant for weeks following its opening.
The real little engine that could here is Bar Normandy.
The tiny spot on Broad Street won us over immediately thanks to Chef Alex Lira
's remarkably affordable and creative menu and bartender Philip Michael Cohen's entertaining banter. We were hesitant for weeks to even mention the name of the place out loud for fear it would get overexposed — too late now. The word is out and, we'll admit, rightly so. Bon Appetit
nailed it when they described what it is about this place that's so great: "The vibe is convivial, like you’ve stumbled into someone’s birthday party and they’re happy to welcome you."
That couldn't be more true. And we hope the team at Bar Normandy have their party pants on today and are celebrating big time for this well deserved accolade.
