The elder Earle earned a Grammy nomination in the Best Song Written for Motion Picture, Television or Other Visual Media category. The nomination is for his song “This City” that closed the season finale of HBO’s critically acclaimed series Treme (Earle, Sr. acted in the New Orleans-based show as well).
Produced by T Bone Burnett and featuring arrangements by Allen Toussaint, “This City” was written specifically for the series. Earle’s previous album Townes (New West) — a tribute to his friend and mentor, the late singer-songwriter Townes Van Zandt, featuring JTE and Steve in a duet on a rendition “Mr. Mudd & Mr. Gold” — won a Grammy in the Best Contemporary Folk Album Category.
