City Paper ran into Sol Driven Train's singer/guitarist Joel Timmons and guitarist/trombonist Ward Buckheister at their Hit or Miss gig — a duo side project — at Art’s Bar & Grill last night (Feb. 2).
During the Hit or Miss set, Timmons switched between acoustic guitar, a pedal-mounted tambourine, and a cajon drum box, on which he delivered some rhythmic hand slaps and deep palm “dooms.” Buckheister plucked his Fender Tele, tapped a shallow bass drum, and blurted a wide range of notes on his trombone (see clips below).
During their set break, they told us things went well and all of the bandmates got along. They were able to play a lot of original music for a variety of receptive audiences. They caught a parade and carnival during the Crucian Christmas/Three Kings Day bacchanalia, surfed some big waves, and chased a few chickens. Audio from several of the shows are available online at their Facebook page.
The band leaves for Florida this week in their Firefly RV (sponsored by Firefly Distillery) for a trip all the way down to the Keys. The band's upcoming local gigs include a Belle Hall Elementary School fund-raiser at Lighthouse on the Creek (100 Church St. in Mt. Pleasant, next to Red’s Ice House) on Sat. Feb. 19 at 7 p.m., and a show at the Pour House on Fri. April 1. Visit soldriventrain.com for more.
