Charleston-based rapper Maurice O’ Clock dropped a video this morning for “5:AM on Folly,” a pretty solid single he wrote last year about how to fully enjoy summer on the Edge of America. And you really need to see it.
Shot and edited by Alex Veazey, a.k.a. rapper Damn Skippy, “5:AM on Folly” is full of clever and comical lyrics like, “We smoke more eighths than the states of America/ A shit-ton, a plethora, a buttload, etcetera.” There are also cameos from local hip-hop group Savage Souls, Jake (who sells beach chairs), and some guy called Nicky. ("Nicky Jones just popped up, now every shot’s a triple.")
O' Clock also gives shoutouts to the Folly Boat, Bert’s Market, and several bars, and you won't want to miss the local love in verses like, “It’s hard as hell to hide a boner in your board shorts/ That's why I only rock a speedo with a captain’s hat/ Still gettin’ service from Follywood to Snapper Jacks/ But Blu is where my heart at/ That little tiki bar is where you most likely find me gettin’ slobbered at.”
Surrounded by the beach and bikinis, the rapper sails effortlessly through other hilarious anecdotes like, “Let’s get another Fireball into the staff/ That tolerates my ass/ I admire y’all.”
For O'Clock, making folks laugh through his music is nothing new. “I’ve done a bunch of Rap Recaps of popular TV shows like Dexter, Breaking Bad, and Game of Thrones,” he says. “The GoT ones popped off a little bit and even got some actors from the show to follow me on Twitter, which was pretty cool. I also did a project called The Universe, where I wrote and recorded a new 16, or more, bar every day for 100 days straight.”
O’Clock, a James Island resident, also makes music with Damn Skippy as Double Dragon. O’ Clock says, “I’m now focusing on putting together a Double Dragon EP with Alex and writing more solo stuff to put towards a mixtape by the end of the year."
