Downtown Charleston is about to get yet another new-and-used record source when Eclectic Cafe & Vinyl arrives at 132 Spring St. Owner Garrett Garnos has spent the past year renovating the space at the corner of Spring St. and Ashley Ave. and hopes for a grand opening by the end of spring.

For about a decade now, Garnos has daydreamed of creating a casual place to hang out, check out records, and sip on coffee, beer, or wine. “It’s just exactly what I want in a place,” he says. “I love vinyl, and I love coffee. It’s really as simple as that.”

The space is roughly 800-square-feet, but Garnos promises it to be a comfortable one with soft cafe seats, a couch, and a couple of plush chairs. “I want folks to read a book and stay for an hour if they want,” he says.

As for the music, the collection is mostly used, and genres range from classical and jazz to R&B and indie rock. And Garnos won’t be separating the records into sections by genre or whether or not it’s new. “I got my start digging for records at Goodwill or antique stores,” he says. “And I like not knowing what you’re gonna find. So, they’ll just be organized alphabetically. As you’re flipping through, you could find a 99-cent Mozart record next to a brand new Modest Mouse record."

In addition to hot drinks and beer and wine, the cafe will serve up sandwiches to snack on, all at cheap price points. Hours will be from 8 a.m.-9 p.m. Sun-Thurs and 9 a.m.-11 p.m. on Fridays and Saturdays. Stay tuned for details on Eclectic Cafe & Vinyl's grand opening.
