Awendaw Green and Dana Beach of the Coastal Conservation League have joined forces to present a new open mic night at the popular Workshop food court, inside Upper King Street’s Pacific & Crate. Workshop debuts the open-mic night on Tues. Feb. 19, continuing every Tuesday through March 26.
“We felt the excitement of the four food court establishments and the large common space were all perfect for combining innovative dining with an informal music venue,” says Beach.
Awendaw Green’s Eddie White adds, “Ohm Radio has a new studio there and it’s an open space that’s ready for music.”
Awendaw also hosted an open mic at Palmetto Brewing once upon a time, where acts like harmonic rockers Sondor Blue got their start. White says nights like these allow musicians of all genres to explore their craft and meet other artists, forming new relationships and strengthening old ones.
“So far we’ve had a fantastic response from musicians ranging from 14 to 74 years old,” says Beach. “There is nothing like live music to transform a city into a community. Most of the iconic musicians who have shaped American musical culture got their starts in small venues. Who knows? Maybe the next Bob Dylan or Joni Mitchell or Kendrick Lamar will begin a career at the open mic.”
