Local favorite band, Ranky Tanky, will perform on the Today show tomorrow, Fri. March 15 at 9 a.m. The band, comprised of Quiana Parler, Quentin Baxter, Kevin Hamilton, Clay Ross, and Charlton Singleton, makes their national television debut with this performance.
Ranky Tanky, a group that describes its sound as "Gullah music of the Carolina coast" has been a rapidly rising star since their eponymous debut in 2017. Prior to performing during last year's Spoleto Festival USA, Ranky Tanky chatted with the City Paper about their success and their experience exposing people to the Gullah culture.
"We saw that there are a lot of other bands from all over the world and they were performing music from their home country or their culture, or wherever they were from," said trumpeter Charlton Singleton. "Being that Gullah is home for us, we just thought we'd give that a shot, and basically we interpreted it based off of the experiences we have as musicians."
It's worth noting that the Today show has been showing Charleston a lot of love these past few weeks, especially after their extensive coverage of last weekend's Wine + Food Festival (looking at you Kathie Lee Gifford and Al Roker). Thanks, Today.
