IllVibeTheTribe's AsiahMae spoke with local R&B artist Niecy Blues, who'll perform with the support of Cola rock 'n' roll band ET Anderson at this weekend's Cultura Festival. A historical time you don't want to miss, Cultura is Charleston's first all-hip-hop, dance, and R&B fest, and it's debuting at the Royal American this Sat. April 20 at 5 p.m.
CP: Why do you feel Cultura is important? NB: Cultura is very important because it’s a place where I can feel included and celebrated as a black artist here in Charleston.
CP: Why is it important for you to be a part of this inaugural festival? NB: It’s very important that I’m a part of this inaugural festival because this will give other black artists (especially women of color) a sense of representation and community. I hope that this will let them know that they are being seen, heard, and valued.
CP: What do you hope to gain from being a part of this? NB: I hope that this will give the community something unique to experience. Most times, people of Charleston are going out and experiencing the same shows over and over again.
CP: What are you currently working on that you’re looking forward to sharing? NB: I’m currently working on a couple of bodies of work (that will include my production) to be released this year. I’m expanding my sound and allowing my work to reflect a lot of different genres that I’ve been studying.
CP: What do you want fans to take away from your set? NB: I want fans to feel a sense of pride, freedom, and inclusion. I want them to feel loved and valued.
