I can't believe I'm going to do this, but I am. I'm going to defend Nikki Haley.
Somebody buy me a beer.
Yesterday, FITSNews reported that the Indian-American governor's voter registration card indicates that she is white. The story has now been picked up by the Post and Courier, who got South Carolina Democratic Party chief Dick Harpootlian to speak on the matter. Dick said:
“Haley has been appearing on television interviews where she calls herself a minority — when it suits her,” Harpootlian said. “When she registers to vote she says she is white. She has developed a pattern of saying whatever is beneficial to her at the moment.”
Well, here's the thing: for all intents and purposes Haley is white. She checked the correct box.
Let me explain.
One, Indians are caucasians as are Jews and Arabs and Persians.
Two, the options on the S.C. Voter Registration application are: White, Black/African American, Asian, Hispanic, Other. ("Other" would likely apply to Pacific Islanders and Aborigines.)
Three, the "Asian" category is most assuredly referring to what was once called the Mongoloid race (this is now considered a derogatory statement): Chinese, Japanese, Koreans, etc. If Haley had checked the box referring to this, she clearly would have been wrong.
Four, seeing as how white and caucasian have become interchangeable, Haley was correct in selecting white.
Where's that drink?
Oh. And for the record. Scientists have determined that biologically there is no such thing as race; it is entirely a social construct created by man.
