Late Show host and Charleston native Stephen Colbert found himself in a bit of legal hot water for resurrecting one of his most popular characters — himself.
Colbert fans will remember his satirically conservative alter ego from his days on Comedy Central’s The Colbert Report. In honor of the recent Republican National Convention, the old “Stephen Colbert” returned for a few segments on CBS. This is where things get confusing, so I’ll let Colbert explain.
“Immediately after that show, CBS’ top lawyer was contacted by the top lawyer from another company to say that the character ‘Stephen Colbert’ is their intellectual property. Which is surprising because I never considered that guy much of an intellectual,” Colbert told his audience, before announcing the death of “Stephen Colbert” of The Colbert Report.
Fortunately, the host was able to gain some comfort from a surprise guest — the identical twin cousin of “Stephen Colbert.” To learn more about how identical twin cousins come to be and see the real Colbert test the limits of intellectual property law, check out that Late Show clip up there.
