HBO picks up Danny McBride's 'Righteous Gemstones,' after pilot shot in Charleston over summer

Television industry watchers are reporting today that HBO has ordered production of a new series from Danny McBride and co., picking up the Righteous Gemstones after shooting a pilot in Charleston over the summer.

Righteous Gemstones follows a family of southern televangelists, starring John Goodman as patriarch Eli Gemstone. McBride stands in as son Jesse and Workaholics's Adam Devine as son Kelvin, and Edi Patterson as daughter Judy Gemstone. The series is the latest local project from Rough House Pictures, McBride's production shop with collaborators Jodi Hill and David Gordon Green. The three have previously worked together on Halloween and Vice Principals, both of which were shot in Charleston where Rough House keeps an office. Halloween hits theaters on Oct. 19.

Goodman is also starring in The Conners, the Roseanne spinoff premiering later this month on ABC. Production on Gemstones will reportedly start once The Conners has wrapped.
