The pocketbook. After polling at 21 percent in a new poll, within six percent of Iowa leader Mitt Romney, Mike Huckabee makes this observation:
How significant is this poll? Well a news report on MSNBC yesterday said that Governor Romney has spent over $10,000,000 on television ads in Iowa, New Hampshire and South Carolina. We have spent $0 on television advertising.
While Rudy has stated clearly that he could win the presidency with those other 47 states, Romney has bet his millions (literally) on Iowa, New Hampshire, and South Carolina. If Huckabee starts looking viable to Joe Voter, Romney could be in real trouble and a loss in Iowa after months and months of leading the field by a wide margin could spread like a virus.
