Paul Thurmond, the son of former Sen. Strom Thurmond, has announced he is dipping a few toes into the race for the 1st Congressional District.
"I will move forward with this exploratory process emboldened by the belief instilled in my be my father, Strom Thurmond, that public service is a privilege and an honor," he said in a release.
Thurmond had declined calls last year to enter the race, expecting that incumbent Rep. Henry Brown would seek a sixth term. But the surprising news last week that Brown was out changed the landscape and led Thurmond to reconsider.
Those hoping for an exciting campaign season just got it. This race already has one political dynasty: Carroll Campbell III, son of popular governor and former Congressman Carroll Campbell Jr., announced his plans to challenge Brown in the GOP primary last spring.
Thurmond surprised many with his modest entrance into politics, running for Charleston County Council in 2006. He's currently serving as vice chairman.
