CNN political reporter Peter Hamby just tweeted that Rick Perry is calling it quits in the campaign for the GOP presidential nomination.
This week, key Rick Perry supporters in South Carolina, including State Sen. Larry Grooms, have been pulling their support from the Perry campaign after seeing disappointing results in polls, which have shown him getting as little as 5 percent of the GOP vote. Even Erick Erickson, the RedState.com blogger who hosted Perry's initial campaign announcement in Charleston in August, has called for Perry to throw in the towel and endorse Newt Gingrich.
If Perry quits, the field of frontrunners narrows to four: Newt Gingrich, Ron Paul, Mitt Romney, and Rick Santorum (oh, and Stephen Colbert, who will be stumping at the College of Charleston's Cistern Yard Friday at 1 p.m.).
Perry will speak at 11 p.m. at the Hyatt Place in North Charleston (7331 Mazyck Road).
