Death to Tyranny (Again)

It may be stretching things to suggest that last November’s election results were shaped by Footlight Theatre’s subversive, guerilla-style production of the play I’m Gonna Kill the President: A Federal Offense. Even so, the brief but incendiary late-night run (Nov. 2-11) did surprisingly well for the theatre, and was apparently successful enough that its producer, Andra Watkins (who’s no longer with Footlight) plans an encore run of the political satire at three secret locations around town during Piccolo Spoleto — making it the very first officially unofficial fringe event this blogger has heard of.

Those who remember last November’s production may recall that the only way to see the show was to call a telephone number listed on flyers around town for instructions. Those who called were instructed to arrive at an outdoor downtown location prior to showtime, where they were directed by ski mask-wearing assistants through a maze of back streets and alleyways to the theatre.

“Shows will start May 26 and run periodically throughout the festival,” Watkins said from an undisclosed location. “Same deal as before, but we will have a website this time, still in the works.”

Word has it Redux Contemporary Art Center on St. Philip Street will be one of the performance locations.
