The year of the trombone?

There were 40 trombones at the opening ceremony playing The Music Man's "76 Trombones." (Ellen Moryl, head of the city's Office of Cultural Affairs, told me on the fly that this was Mayor Joe Riley's idea). Trombonist, singer, and entertainer Wycliffe Gordon bedazzled audiences with the Charleston Symphony Orchestra and local drummer extraordinaire Quinten Baxter. And before that, on the steps of the U.S. Custom House, there was a concert simply and appropriately called "Trombones!" Last year had the look and feel of the year of the ukulele — drag queens, clowns, and comedians were all playing the Hawaiian instrument. This year, we have one ukulele player in Jack Shimabukuro. As for slide trombones, we've had already about 50 of those. Is this is year of the trombone? -JS
