f05e/1243291589-ciammaurughi_.jpg I just got back in the office from seeing and hearing the opening solo performance of Italian pianist Ramberto Ciammarughi’s three-night stint at the Recital Hall in Albert Simons Center (54 St. Philip St.). He was absolutely brilliant, taking the audience on what he described as "a journey through cinematic music …the memories, reflections, and motifs.” The highly improvisational set was quite a ride.

The soft-spoken pianist performed during last year’s Spoleto Jazz series with jazz sax player Stefano “Cocco” Cantini’s combo. This year, his dynamic 80-minute performance ventured far beyond breezy Mediterranean bebop. Look for a full review on Tuesday.

Ciammarughi performs again on Tues. May 26 at 7 p.m. and 9 p.m., and on Wed. May 27 at 5 p.m. and 7 p.m. Admission is $30. Call (843) 722-2764 for more info.
