Tutus, chest hair, and size 13 pointe shoes. That’s Les Ballets Trockadero de Monte Carlo in a nutshell. The all-male ballet troupe is sure to be a Spoleto Festival favorite, thanks to their combination of skillful classical ballet and campy humor. “Go For Barocco” is the name of their signature piece, starring “ballerinas” with names like Svetlana Lofatkina and Ida Nevasayneva. One dancer in particular may be familiar to local audiences: Robert Carter (also known as Olga Supphoza and Yuri Smirnov) is from Charleston.
Les Trocks (as they’re affectionately known to fans) will be at the Gaillard May 28-30. Ticket range from $15-$75. (We recommend that you sit as close to the stage as possible to fully appreciate the, erm, maleness of the dancers). On May 30, Martha Teichner will interviews Tory Dobrin, artistic director of Les Trocks, along with Carter in the Exhibition Hall of the Gaillard Auditorium.
