Happy Spoleto, y’all. This year Spoleto USA celebrates its 40th year, begging the question: is 40 the new 30? Find out at this week's opening celebration, held on noon Fri. at Charleston City Hall at noon.

Mayor John Tecklenburg will address the crowd at this event — the first time a mayor other than Joe Riley has spoken during the opening ceremonies. This year’s master of ceremonies is Spoleto Fest’s board of directors chairman M. Edward Sellers and Rev. Dr. Betty Deas Clark, pastor of Mother Emanuel AME Church will give the invocation.

Head back downtown at 8 p.m. for Piccolo Spoleto's sunset serenade, a free outdoor concert featuring the Charleston Symphony Orchestra. The serenade will be held at the US Custom House.
