South Carolina government offices are closed today for Confederate Memorial Day in commemoration of those lost during the South's failed rebellion against the federal government.

Still digging out of a surprise $18 million budget hole, Charleston schools officials voted yesterday to close Lincoln Middle-High School in McClellanville last night and floated a commercial property tax increase to help replenish district coffers. Source: P&C

Pretty brutal P&C lede from Deanna Pan: "The Charleston County School Board voted to raises taxes to avoid another disastrous, multimillion-dollar budget shortfall, but not before closing a historically black neighborhood school."

The Citadel says it won't grant a Muslim woman applying for admission an exception to wear a hijab in keeping with her religious beliefs along with the Citadel uniform, citing the school's mission of "honor, duty and respect." Source: P&C

Jennifer Pinckney, the widow of Rev. Clementa Pinckney accepted her late husband's posthumous degree yesterday in Washington from Wesley Theological Seminary. At the time of his death, Rev. Pinckney, who was also a local state senator, was working on his dissertation examining the dual role of pastors and public servants in the African-American community. Source: SC Radio, The State
