Ahead of this week’s events to commemorate the one-year anniversary of the tragedy at Emanuel AME Church, the Charleston Police Department has announced street closures and safety measures being taken.

On Fri. June 17, an ecumenical service honoring the victims, families, survivors, and church members at Mother Emanuel will be held at the College of Charleston’s TD Arena, beginning at 10 a.m. A limited number of tickets are available at no charge to the public for this event and are only available online at cofcsports.com/tickets. Those reserving a spot must print out there tickets at home in advance. All items brought into the arena will be screened, so police are asking that those attending not bring any large purses or bags.

Local, state, and federal agencies will participate in the safety efforts surrounding the events planned this week. Charleston Police Chief Greg Mullen said that the recent mass shooting in Orlando serves as a reminder that these security measures are absolutely necessary.

“It just confirms for us that we are doing the right thing and that we are in the position that we can, to the best our ability, make sure that all these people participating, as well as the remainder of our city is safe during this very high-profile event.”

Friday

Streets surrounding the arena will be closed leading up the service to allow for security sweeps. Those with any questions regarding street closures and updates can call the department’s Joint Information Center at (843) 619-6133. The center’s lines will open at 5:30 a.m. Friday morning and reopen again at 6:30 a.m. Saturday morning.

Beginning at 6 a.m. on Friday, Meeting Street between John and Wentworth Streets will close to traffic. Meeting Street between John and Calhoun streets will reopen at approximately 10:30 a.m. Meeting Street between Calhoun and Wentworth will remain closed until the conclusion of the service.

George Street between King Street and Anson will be closed at 6 a.m. and reopen once the service ends. Burns Lane between King and Meeting will also be closed during this time.
