Rio de Janeiro will host the 2016 Olympic Summer Games beginning Aug. 5
The 2016 Summer Olympics are less than two weeks away, and although things aren’t going quite so smoothly as Rio races toward the brink of complete disaster, there is still a silver lining to the Zika-infected cloud of pollutants hanging above the competition.
Charleston’s own Raven Saunders will have the honor of representing the United States in shot put in this year’s games. With the opportunity of seeing the Burke grad compete on the world’s grandest stage, Saunders’ family has set up a GoFundMe account
to raise money for the trip to Rio. In only 12 days, donations have surpassed $15,000, but the account is still short of its $20,000 goal. According to the GoFundMe page, donations will be used to help Saunders’ aunt, mother, and younger sister pay for travel expenses, hotel accommodations, food, transportation, event tickets, and incidentals associated with international travel.
There is still no word on whether or not the city of Rio will start their own GoFundMe account to pay for the opening ceremony.
