A Charleston County detention officer was arrested over the weekend on charges of sexual misconduct with an inmate.

Master Detention Deputy John Paul Rivers Jr., age 38, was taken into custody after an inmate accused Rivers of pressing his genitals against her buttocks while the detention officer was supervising a cleaning detail on June 8. Rivers is also accused of rubbing the 25-year-old inmate’s neck with his hands. Both Rivers and the inmate were completely clothed at the time of the incident, according to a spokesperson for the Charleston County Sheriff’s Office. The identity of the victim has not been revealed. Al Cannon Detention Center currently houses 113 female inmates.

According to the arrest affidavit, the Charleston County Detention Center received a sexual misconduct complaint from a female inmate currently housed at the facility. Following the complaint, Rivers was questioned regarding the alleged incident and admitted that he touched the inmate inappropriately, according to a detective with the Charleston County Sheriff’s Office.

Rivers has worked with at the Al Cannon Detention Center since 2007 and was terminated shortly before his arrest this weekend, according to a statement released by Sheriff’s Office spokesperson Lt. Rita Zelinsky. The detention center website shows that Rivers was released on $15,000 bond.

“The Charleston County Sheriff’s Office is dedicated to maintaining secure jail operations and facilities, while preserving the rights and dignity of all who are incarcerated. The sheriff and his staff take all allegations of misconduct seriously and worked immediately to investigate this incident,” wrote Lt. Zelinsky. “Members of our victim’s advocate office met with the victim after the incident was reported to discuss services available to her.”
