The city of Charleston has formally addressed rumors of an alleged Ku Klux Klan rally planned to hit Charleston on Sept. 9.

Over the past week, a flyer declaring the "largest Klan rally in the history of the Klan" followed by mention of the College of Charleston has been circulating online. The flyer includes a picture of convicted Emanuel AME Church shooter Dylann Roof and the instruction to "Fight against removing our Confederate monuments" at the bottom.

On Friday, city spokesman Jack O'Toole released a statement regarding the flyer, saying, “The College of Charleston and the Charleston Police Department, along with their state and federal partners, are working together in reference to a flyer announcing a Klan rally at the College on Sept, 9, 2017. To date, we have heard from no one with regard to our city's process for permitting and planning such events, and we are continuing to monitor the situation.”

CofC President Glenn McConnell and college Chief of Police Robert Reese also issued a message to the campus community Friday.

"College officials and law enforcement have been investigating a social media post/flier regarding an alleged KKK event in Charleston. The College continues to work with law enforcement officials to monitor the situation closely," reads the campus-wide notification. "We will take appropriate precautions if it is determined necessary. Rest assured, campus safety is our top priority, and we will continue to do everything in our power to protect our community."

The flyer includes the web address for the Loyal White Knights of the Ku Klux Klan. The website is currently inactive.

The Klan has not returned a call from the City Paper inquiring as to whether any rally is planned in Charleston in the near future. We did leave a very clear message for the Loyal White Knights to call us back whenever they get a chance.
