Facebook: Katie Arrington and Joe Cunningham
Democrat Joe Cunningham and Republican Katie Arrington will debate at Charleston Southern University on Tues. Oct. 16 at 7 p.m., exactly three weeks before the Nov. 6 election.
The first-time congressional candidates will meet for an hour in an event that will be broadcast on WCIV-TV (ABC News 4) and streamed live on abcnews4.com and facebook.com/abcnews4.
WCIV-TV anchor Dean Stephens will moderate the evening. Panelists include News 4's morning anchor Tessa Spencer Adams, CSU political science professor Christi Gramling, and CSU political science senior Diana Snellgrove.
This is the first time that Cunningham and Arrington will meet face-to-face to differentiate their positions in their race to represent the Lowcountry in the U.S. House of Representatives.
The First Congressional District, which stretches from the Charleston area to Hilton Head Island and includes much of the City of Charleston, is currently represented by former S.C. Gov. Mark Sanford.
Sanford has been a vocal critic of President Donald Trump. The president used his platform to endorse Arrington in June's primary, including in a last-minute Election Day tweet calling Sanford "MIA and nothing but trouble." Sanford has not endorsed in the race, telling P&C
this month that he was having a hard time deciding between a Democrat and a candidate who has wholly embraced Trump.
Arrington is a defense contractor executive from Summerville who was elected to the S.C. House of Representatives in 2016.
Cunningham, a construction law attorney from West Ashley, was endorsed by former Vice President Joe Biden
