"You Lie!" Creates Windfall for Joe Wilson and His Opponent

The State newspaper reports that GOP 2nd District S.C. Rep. Joe Wilson's "You Lie!" rant last September during President Obama's address to a joint session of Congress has created a campaign windfall for Wilson and his Democratic opponent in November Rob Miller. Wilson has become a hero of the right and Miller a hero of the left and money is pouring in to both candidates from around the candidates.

WASHINGTON — One year ago today, an insult yelled at the president by a congressman on national TV turned U.S. Rep. Joe Wilson into an overnight conservative hero and made Rob Miller one of the Democrats’ best hopes for picking up a Republican seat in November.

Thanks to the Republican Wilson’s “You lie!” shout Sept. 9, 2009, as President Barack Obama addressed a joint session of Congress, his re-election campaign is the nation’s richest race and among the most closely watched.

U.S. Rep. Joe Wilson and Beaufort businessman Rob Miller are battling it out for Wilson’s 2nd congressional district seat for the second straight election. This time, both Miller and Wilson are flush with cash, a benefit of Wilson’s “you lie” outburst a year ago. How the two election cycles compare:

Wilson and Democratic challenger Miller, a former Marine Corps captain who served in Iraq, raised a combined $4.6 million through June 30, most of it from outside of South Carolina.

Miller, having brought in $2.5 million, is the only non-incumbent among the U.S. House’s Top 10 fundraisers. Wilson, with $4 million in total contributions, trails only three lawmakers, two of them his party’s U.S. House leaders in Reps. John Boehner and Eric Cantor. Both candidates have increased their fundraising this election cycle roughly four-fold

compared to their 2008 race.
