Several actors and film-makers nominated for an Oscar told the Associated Press they would not attend the Academy Awards ceremony if the Writer's Guild decides to strike it. Lots of people have asked me recently what I think of all this and here it is — this is interesting.
Broadcast television was already losing viewers and Americans were already skipping the multiplex in favor of the internet or video games (Hollywood made a bundle last year, but that's due to a burgeoning international market). What we're witnessing is a sea change as interesting as the outcome of the Super Bowl. Only what happens here is far more important to American culture than who has the best potato chip commercial.
