Festivals + Events, Fall Arts Picks

2010 MOJA Arts Festival

When: Sept. 23-Oct. 3 2010

Charleston’s art scene gets a much-needed dose of diversity every fall when the MOJA Arts Festival takes over town. A celebration of African-American and Caribbean arts, MOJA features more than a week of events and performances from local and national-level artists.

This year’s highlight is the finale concert with Boyz II Men and Patti LaBelle at the Family Circle Tennis Center. Folks are also buzzing about the I-8-TEE exhibit at the Gaillard, which will include artists and poets — like Karole Turner Campbell, Zelda Grant, and Marjory Wentworth —  reflecting on Haiti. The Denver-based Cleo Robinson Dance Ensemble is set for at least one performance, and the line-up also includes plays, concerts, and poetry readings from local talents. And you can count on the bass-thumping Reggae Block Dance to kick it all off in proper style downtown. —Erica Jackson
