2010 Redux Summer Art Institute Exhibition

When: Tuesdays-Saturdays. Continues through July 31 2010

There’s nothing worse than overachievers, the kind of kids who spend their breaks from school at internships or doing volunteer work or, God forbid, taking classes. Like the 30 high school students that participated in the 2010 Redux Summer Art Institute, a joint effort by the gallery and the Charleston County School District. Just who do they think they are? They’re getting the ultimate one-up on their college applications, resumés, and professional portfolios. Jerks. Redux selected these young adults to participate in the program, which took place in June at the art gallery and Burke High School. The burgeoning artists took classes in various media, like painting, drawing, and sculpture, from professional artists Sara Ferguson, Brian Kane, and Tony Csavas. The students will get to take part in what might be their first-ever exhibition on Friday night, and you’ll get to see the future of Charleston’s creative world. But keep an eye on those youngins. They may be talented, but they’re still not old enough to drink the free wine. —Susan Cohen
