Liv Antonecchia, owner of Surface Craft Gallery, tasked local artists with a project: draw, paint, or create in whatever form, in a sketch book for 30 days and display your finished products at the gallery. With the help of local artists Kristen Solecki and Kris Westerson, who created the tiny sketch books, Antonecchia distributed her small canvases to over 40 visual and literary artists like Allison Ross, Jack Case, Mary Whaley Adams, Sam Helms, and more. While a few of the sketchbooks are sculptural and delicate in nature, most are totally tactile — you can pick them up and look at them, which is a rarity for any art opening. With sketchbooks displaying everything from political cartoons to comics, Antonecchia says that she hopes to continue the January event each year, calling the project a great refresher for artists of all kinds.
