The seventh annual Southeastern Beard & Moustache Championships, hosted by the beer can professor himself, Paul Roof, features over 200 contestants competing for best facial hair, and raising money for Low Country Women with Wings and Big Brother Big Sisters of Charleston. And yes, it is as fun as it sounds, with competitors going, err, face to face, in both men and women’s categories. After walking down the red carpet, the competitors hit the stage, competing for the honor of best mustache or beard — categories range from such specifics as Full Beard Natural Over 12 inches to Full Beard Freestyle, where styling aids are allowed, but structural supports are prohibited. “The guys get dressed up, because, this is Charleston,” says Roof of seersucker-clad mustachioed gents. As for the ladies, well, they certainly aren’t left out, with both a Southern Belle realistic and creative category. Roof filled us in on some past variations on this theme: for a creative take, one woman made a beard out of wine corks, which she called a five o’cork shadow. And for real? Well, one time a woman glued her friend’s old dreads onto her face. Anything for fame, y’all.
Price: $20/competitor, $10/spectator
