The Greater Charleston Lowcountry Jazz Festival returns for its eighth year, with all performances held at the North Charleston Performing Arts Center. Contemporary jazz composer and multi-instrumentalist Brian Culbertson and saxophone duo David Sanborn and Dave Koz take the stage on Friday night. Avery Sunshine and Will Downing will bring an R&B flavor to Saturday’s performances, and adult contemporary star Peabo Bryson and smooth jazz supergroup Jazz Funk Soul will bring the festival to a close on Sunday. Attendees can also check out the Jazzing with Sugar Summit on Saturday, which features television chef Curtis Aikens, who will discuss myths about diabetes, heart attacks, and strokes in the African-American community. Both events are sponsored by Closing the Gap in Health Care, Inc., an organization whose mission is “to decrease health disparities and increase the health literacy of African Americans and the underserved communities throughout the Carolinas.” Proceeds from the festival go to Closing the Gap and the Thaddeus John Bell, M.D. Endowment Fund.
