“A Window Into Education” Gala w/ The Quentin Baxter Quartet

When: Fri., Jan. 16 2009

Immediately following the Wynton Marsalis and Jazz at Lincoln Center Orchestra concert at the Charleston Music Hall on Friday evening, an elegant gala titled “A Window Into Education” will commence around the corner in the courtyard of the William Aiken House (465 King St.). Local drummer, teacher, and bandleader Quentin Baxter — a top-shelf jazz musician and mentor of great popularity and reputation — plans to lead his own combo through some smooth and dynamic sets of jazz at the Gala. The lineup includes three “usual suspects:” Mark Sterbank on tenor sax, Tommy Gill on piano, and Kevin Hamilton on bass. The quartet performs as part of the first annual education fund-raiser for the Charleston Concert Association (see story on p. 50). A donation of $250 includes a VIP concert ticket to the Wynton Marsalis gig. A $150 donation gets you into the gala (alongside Marsalis and his orchestra-mates). —T. Ballard Lesemann
