Amp Up Girls Rock Charleston

When: Fri., Feb. 10, 8 p.m.-1 a.m. 2012

As awesome as we all thought the Spice Girls were at some point, there’s no arguing that the Runaways were a lot more badass. And honestly, I wish I’d listened to my older sister and traded Baby One More Time for a Blondie record a lot sooner than I did. That’s why I’m so incredibly jealous of everyone that gets to participate in Girls Rock Charleston, a summer camp where young women not only learn how to play their chosen instruments, but write songs, form bands, make their own merch, and gain a heck of a lot of self-confidence. If you think it’s an awesome concept, or just want to ensure that the next generation of women won’t be looking up to some coked-out Disney Channel star as a role model, be sure to head to the Tin Roof this Friday for the Amp Up Girls Rock Fundraiser, where the ladies behind the camp are hoping to raise money to expand their operation. There’ll be live music by Southern Femisphere, Guam, Romantic Animal, and General Oglethorpe and the Panhandlers, followed by a dance party and Women Who Rock trivia. If you don’t have $7 to spare for the cover charge, you can also donate a piece of gear valued at $15 or more — from lightly used instruments to mic cables — and they’ll make it a part of their new gear library, so girls who don’t own equipment can borrow what they need.
