Annual Lowcountry Invitational Marching Festival

When: Sat., Oct. 6, 2:30 p.m. 2012

When’s the last time you saw a marching band competition? If you’re like us, never — and as Alison Piepmeier told us in last week’s City Paper, that’s a big mistake. Take care of that this weekend at the Lowcountry Invitational Marching Band Competition, where 20 high school marching bands will take to the field to be evaluated on music, pageantry, and choreography by nationally ranked judges. “It’s like watching 20 mini Broadway shows. With the music and dancing, it’s very theatrical,” says event representative Rebecca Imholz. Between sets, walk through Vicki’s Village where you can find marching band-themed items like jewelry and T-shirts. Showgoers can also try their hand (or hands, that is) at the Fastest Drummer Competition. Local restaurants will be serving up tons of great food, and unlike at many sporting events, where getting a good meal means shelling out $20s, prices will be low — around $5. Once the competition wraps up at 9 p.m., seven-time 5A State Marching Band Champions from Wando High School will perform the finale of their show, “Immortal.”
